We send you, future genealogist, all best wishes across the years in proving this relationship. The prize for this book would be to find the parents of our immigrant ancestor, William Shurtleff, and then to extend our family tree backwards in England—with the help of Joseph Hunter’s superb appendix (p. 535-555) in the original 1912 edition of this book, compiled by Benjamin Shurtleff. The rapid growth of interest in genealogy and the Internet may help. If you make this connection, we would suggest adding two chapters to this book:

William Roy Shurtleff has collected four thick files of information on these two subjects—plus all major books, scrapbooks, diaries, photo albums, etc. related to Shurtleff and Lawton family history.

The final very important project would be to develop and maintain a website for the Shurtleff and Lawton families. It could be loaded with valuable content from the beginning: (1) The entire contents of William’s genealogical database (8,414 names and 2,983 families—as of Nov. 2004). (2) The entire contents of this book. (3) The 750 family photos that Akiko has scanned—many of which do not appear in this book.

As I make my way through Ancestry.com (you can find me as Robert Eugene Shurtleff), I am discovering generations prior to William Shurtleff (Ascendants of William Shurtleff (1624 – 1666) (pre 1624) as well as after the publishing of this book in 2005 (Descendants of William Shurtleff (1624 -1666)(post 2005).

The information in Ancestry.com for these generations are hints given by Ancestry.com and accepted by us based on recommendations of Ancestry.com and the documentation they found and / or were given via other family trees.

If you have any information in specific (with documentation) you’d like the family to be aware of, please do let me know.

The picture to the right is of Rob Lothrop Shurtleff (my great grandfather). He is the 2nd of our family to do serious family genealogy research. His work published in 1976 is based on work done by Dr. Benjamin Shurtleff (founder of Shurtleff College (Alton, IL 1836).

See links page for these works. Both cited William Shurtleff (1624 – 1666) as the first known Shurtleff.
