William Shurtleff and Lawton Shurtleff wish to give their sincere thanks to the many people who helped in the creation of this work:
Special thanks is reserved to Don Lawton for his good cheer, remarkable memory, and unmatched story telling ability—from age 89 to 100! Don was the only one of Frank and Fannie Lawton’s children still living, when this all start-ed. Without his kindness and patience in submit-ting to more than 20 tape-recorded interviews (transcribed, they fill 55 typed pages) over a peri-od of 10 years, our history of the Lawton family would be but a faint shadow of what it is now.
To Nancy and Gene, Roy and Hazle Shurtleff’s children, for their patience in enduring numerous interviews and questions, their ongoing help and encouragement, and their generous financial assistance in publishing this book. They read every page at least once and made many valuable additions and corrections. And to Anneke Shurtleff and Joey Shurtleff for their countless hours of proofreading and typing respectively.
To the many other descendants of Frank and Fannie Lawton, who helped and contributed so much (granting interviews, proofreading, telling stories, loaning photos). Special thanks to: Francis Birney Seymour Holmes, Nonie & Bern Kelly, Mardy & Bill Love, Ed Martin, Jr., Jerry Martin, Randy Martin, Marney Helvey Owens, Jean & Chuck Parker, Carol & Arnie Pedersen, Birnelyn Seymour Piper, Betty & Ray Swanson, and Marilyn & Jim Zurcher.
To the descendants of Charlotte Avery Meek Shurtleff, Charlotte Martin Adams and Lynette Martin Dahl for their stories and photographs.
To Kay Allen for her fine genealogical research.
To Bonnie Meyer for her excellent research and photographs, and for writing most of the chapter on the Avery, Avann, and Reanier families.
We have taken the liberty of making occa-sional references to personal matters of finance, dollar values of goods and services etc., only because we felt they often have real historical interest and significance.
Although every attempt has been made to ensure fairness and accuracy throughout this book, it doubtless will have its share of errors in fact and judgment, as well as omissions, particu-larly in the selection of photographs from among the many so generously provided. These, of course, are the responsibility of the authors alone.
